History

Thirugnanasambandar (7th Century CE) has rendered Thevaram Hymns for the lord here at Thirukannaar Kovil.

Legend

Lord Vishnu in his Vaamana Avatar is believed to have worshiped here at Thirukannaar Kovil.

Cursed by Sage Gautama for illegitimate relationship with his wife Ahalya to be with a thousand eyes all over his body, Indra prayed here at Thirukannaar Kovil to the Lord who took over the eyes and reinstated Indra to his former glory. Hence the name Kan(eye) Aayiram(a thousand) Udayar (he who is with).

Directions

Thirukannaar Kovil, Kurumanakkudi is about 5 kilometers south east of Vaitheeswaran Kovil. Take the Mayiladuthurai road and after 2 Kilometers take a left to the Bagasalai Road. The temple is close to Bagasalai.
