Legend

During the churning of the milk ocean, Vasuki the serpent used as the rope for the purpose got exhausted and split its venom. The Lord swallowed the poison protecting the Devas. Vasuki repented and performed a penance. The lord appeared and agreed to stay here at Naganadhaswamy Keezhaperumpallam upon Vasuki’s request. Thus the name of the lord here is Naganathaswamy and the holy water is Naga Theertham. Astronomically, Rahu and Ketu denote the points of intersection of the paths of the Sun and the Moon as they move on the celestial sphere. Therefore, Rahu and Ketu are respectively called the north and the south lunar nodes.
