Vaaleeswarar Mylapore is a small east facing small temple. This is one of the seven Sapthasthana (Saptha meaning seven) temples for Shiva in Mylapore worshipped by the Saptha rishis – Adri (Theerthapaleeswarar Temple), Brigu (Malleeswarar Temple), Kutsa (Virupaksheeswarar Temple), Vashishta (Karaneeswarar Temple), Gautama (Valeeswarar Temple), Kasyapa (Kapaleeswarar Temple) and Angirasa (Velleeswarar Temple). The temple with a single Prakara has many deities. The Vinayaka here is sitting on an Aavudayar (base of a lingam) which is not common. Vaali’s idol is seen praying next to the Lingam. History

Vaaleeswarar Mylapore is a small east facing ancient temple, the historical information is not available. However it is said to be older than about 400 years.

Mythology

Vaalee (the monkey king of Kishkinta), an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva, incited into this by his mother visited many Shiva temples on her request and performed a penance here. He received a boon from Shiva that he will get an additional half of his opponent’s strength when he faces them in a battle. The lord who was known as Pavatharanyeswarar till then came to be known as Vaaleeswarar after this. It is also said that there is a Jeevasamadhi (burial) of a Sidhdhar underneath here at Valeeswarar Mylapore.

As you come out of the nearby Karaneeswarar Temple take a right and turn first left to reach Vaaleeswarar Mylapore.
