Agasteeswarar Nedunkundram is an ancient east facing temple with the main entrance from the south. There is also a small, but closed, gate at the east in front of which is a large Banyan tree and a large Vinayaka on the side of the gate. A large temple tank is northeast of the temple. In the Tamil month of Maasi (February – March), a day after Sivaratri the Sun’s rays fall on the main deity for a short while in the morning. The Lingam is large in size. The Navagrahas are present with their Mounts. There are some nice carvings on the surrounding pillars including one of Anjaneya. A carving of the Snake swallowing the Moon is on the ceiling of the main entrance to the Sanctum.

History

Agasteeswarar Nedunkundram is an ancient temple believed to be at least 1000 years old and was said by the priest to have been built during the Pallava era. The idols are all looking ancient. There are several stone inscriptions around the sanctum base.

Legend

It is believed that deity here at Agasteeswarar Nedunkundram was installed and worshiped by Sage Agastya when he was in the south to offset the imbalance created due to the large congregation of gods and celestials at Lord Shiva’s wedding in Mount Kailash.

Directions

Agasteeswarar Nedunkundram is 2 kilometers meters north of Kolapakkam which is about 3 kilometers before Vandalur when you go from Kelambakkam, Mambakkam side. The roads leading to the temple are narrow. See our map below for exact location.
