Districts of Tamilnadu

Nowhere else in the known universe have the elements of nature, man and belief come together to create such magnificent monuments that are home to a Million Gods as in India. More so in South India and even more so in the land of the mighty Pallavas, Cheras, Cholas and Pandyas that we today call Tamilnadu. Glory be to the common man who sacrificed sweat, blood and life to build these grandiose Temples that have withstood the ravages of time, nature and man himself.

For convenience we have further divided this district roughly into Taluks.

What started as pilgrimage trips by two childhood friends A.Surendranath Arya and N.S.Mohanakrishnan took a turn to showcase their sights and experiences to all in the World. The MillionGods Project is an effort to list and document Tamilnadu Temples including all the districts of Tamilnadu. To make this possible we are constantly in search of information relating to Tamilnadu Temples from every nook and corner of the state. We request the support of our audience in terms of information that can help us in making this mammoth task possible. Our approach is focused on a worldwide audience and we try our best to provide the information in a format that is easy to read and relate to with uniformity from page to page. The categories are standardized into (1) Paadal Petra Sthalams (temples that have been praised by the three great saints of Saivism – Thirugnanasambandar, Thirunavukkarasar, and Sundarar), (2) 108 Divya Desam Temples (temples that have been praised by the 12 Azhwars of Vaishnavism), (3) Saivite (Shiva temples which are older than about 300-500 years), (4) Vaishnavite (Vishnu temples which are older than about 300-500 years), (5) Others (Vinayaka, Murugan, Amman and other shrines which are old).
